About

Hi, I’m Andrew. I make Andrew Seems Sketchy, a YouTube channel about urban sketching, drawing, and watercolor, based in Wake Forest, NC.

I’ve been drawing on and off since I was a kid, but life had a way of pushing it aside for years at a time. A few years ago I picked it back up in earnest, found the Urban Sketchers chapter here in Raleigh, went to a meeting, and that was it. I’ve been sketching and painting almost every day since: out and about as I travel for work and for fun, around home in the greater metro area, and pretty much anywhere sketching will take me. My friends and travel companions have made peace with my ever-present sketchbook.

I draw a little bit of everything: urban scenes, nature, architecture, people, portraits, figure work, travel sketches, and even the occasional piece from imagination. Urban sketching is still my favorite. It’s as much about the excuse to get outside and see something new as it is about the sketching itself. The community around it is a big part of why I keep showing up. I’m not a trained artist and I’m not here to teach technique beyond a few tips I’ve learned along the way that work for me. I’m just documenting an ongoing, very amateur self-education in watching, drawing, and painting the world as I go.

This site is the written companion to the channel: a home for the sketch archive, longer journal posts that don’t fit in a video description, and (eventually) a small shop for prints, originals, and digital downloads.

Curious what’s actually in my bag? I keep a running, regularly-updated Kit page: papers, pencils, pens, and paint.
